He attacked her before escaping capture
Scenario
Delia Balmer, an agency nurse, met Sweeney, who confessed to killing his ex-girlfriend. Balmer rebuilt her life only to confront Sweeney seven years later after he was arrested for another murder.
Based on a true crime story
The bodies were dumped in canals in Rotterdam (not Amsterdam) and London. I reluctantly ventured in, thinking that despite the content, this would be a poorly realized portrayal of one woman’s horror story.
It’s Delia that kept me watching, it’s Delia that made this show extraordinary
So many of these programs can drift into the sentimental or sensationalist and cause the viewer to miss the point or, worse, be manipulated into pained reactions. I was wrong, Anna Maxwell-Martin’s performance was so good it felt like I was listening to Delia.
I’d like to make two other comments in passing
Delia was a hard job even before the difficulties, and her uncompromising attitude towards what she probably thought were petty rules and conventions doesn’t exactly endear her to others. The sheer frustration of once again watching the Keystone Cops metaphorically fumbling around in an unlit room because they didn’t bother to turn the lights on was palpable.
Enough said: I highly recommend the show
The anger at the justice system that allows clearly defenseless victims to be pilloried in the witness box had reached a fever pitch.
